The New York Red Bulls are redefining what it means to create an inclusive sports experience. At their Autism Acceptance match on April 5, 2025, the club unveiled a fully upgraded Altec Lansing Sensory Room at Sports Illustrated Stadium—a state-of-the-art retreat designed to support fans with sensory processing challenges, including those on the autism spectrum.
This redesigned space marks a powerful step forward in making high-energy sports environments more accessible. For families navigating overstimulation, loud crowds, and unpredictable game-day excitement, the sensory room offers a calm, secure setting without taking away from the joy of live soccer.
A Stadium Experience That Welcomes Everyone
Originally opened in 2017, the sensory room has now been completely overhauled with the help of Altec Lansing and KultureCity, both leaders in sensory accessibility. The updated room features cutting-edge noise-canceling headphones (including child-safe models), low-stimulation lighting, and calming tactile activities. It’s all engineered to help guests feel safe and engaged—without becoming overwhelmed.
What’s more, access to the sensory room doesn’t require a special ticket. Fans simply need to visit Fan Services on game day, where staff will assist them in reaching the fifth-floor space. It’s a model of easy, no-barrier inclusion that other venues should take note of.

More Than a Room—A Sensory-Friendly Matchday
The Red Bulls also made broader accommodations for their Autism Acceptance match. Music volume throughout the stadium was lowered, sensory kits were distributed (including fidget toys and visual cue cards), and additional quiet zones were available throughout the venue. These changes transformed the match into a welcoming space not just for neurodivergent individuals, but for entire families who might otherwise avoid large, crowded events.
Why Sensory Accessibility in Public Spaces Matters
Sports arenas and public venues can be overwhelming for individuals with autism or other sensory sensitivities. By offering calming alternatives, teams like the Red Bulls are helping reduce exclusion and anxiety—and in doing so, sending a clear message: every fan belongs.
These kinds of community-centered efforts go hand-in-hand with therapeutic services that support individuals with autism beyond event spaces. While sensory rooms offer short-term relief in overstimulating environments, consistent therapeutic support builds long-term growth in social, behavioral, and emotional development.
