Recognizing this, Newark Liberty International Airport recently opened a new sensory room in Terminal A designed to provide a calm, supportive space for travelers on the autism spectrum and those with other sensory needs.
This 1,400-square-foot post-security sensory room offers a tranquil underwater theme complete with soothing bubble tubes, interactive fish tanks, and calming sea life projections. It also features a unique aircraft cabin replica, giving travelers the chance to familiarize themselves with the flight experience in a low-stress environment.
Making Air Travel More Accessible and Comfortable
The sensory room complements an existing pre-security sensory space in Terminal A and enhances the airport’s overall commitment to accessibility. Alongside specially trained TSA Cares staff and new amenities like meditation and business rooms, these efforts make air travel less overwhelming for neurodivergent passengers.
The design of these spaces involved experts from the Anderson Center for Autism to ensure the environment meets the specific needs of autistic travelers and their families. The goal is to transform stressful journeys into empowering experiences where travelers feel understood, supported, and at ease.
